Description:
The bag tells you its own age. Printed across the front panel: “the team enters its fourth full season on the brink of greatness.” Benetton Formula launched in February 1986. Count forward and you land on 1989 — the year of the B189, Alessandro Nannini, and a first win at Suzuka that made the marketing copy look prophetic.
Everything else agrees. The circular BF roundel on the end caps is the original Benetton Formula mark, retired long before the mid-90s wordmark. And there isn’t a cigarette logo anywhere on it, because there wasn’t one on the cars — Benetton raced in its own colors until Camel arrived in 1991.
Which is the whole point of this piece. Green, orange, cobalt, red and yellow paneled nylon, UCB Team and F-1 Circuit graphics, a full-length zip and a webbing shoulder strap. This is Formula 1 before the sport was sold in monochrome. It’s a United Colors advertisement shaped like luggage.
Late-80s Benetton is genuinely thin on the ground. Far fewer people were buying F1 merchandise in 1989, and nylon bags were bought to be used. Most didn’t make it.
Details
Paneled nylon · full-length top zip with front zip pocket · twin webbing handles, detachable shoulder strap · Benetton Formula 1 woven label
Condition
Good vintage. Soiling to the white center panel and one end cap, consistent with age and use. Light surface cracking to the printed graphics. Zippers, handles, hardware and strap all sound.
