Description
This jacket wears that season on its sleeves — literally. Renault Sport across the back. elf on the right arm, the fuel partner Benetton ran with before the switch to Agip. Goodyear and BBS on the left. Benetton Sportsystem on the chest, the sporting-goods division that would be folded into Playlife within two years. Read together, those sponsors only coexisted for a narrow window in the mid-90s. Nothing about this jacket is generic.
Vintage-inspired racing is everywhere. This is the original.
Made in Italy and finished in heavily faded black/charcoal, the jacket features extensive period Benetton F1 branding: Benetton Formula 1 Racing Team and Benetton Sportsystem at the chest, BBS, Goodyear, Elf and United Colors of Benetton sponsor patches across the sleeves, and an oversized Benetton Formula 1 Racing Team / powered by Renault Sport graphic across the back. The sponsor combination corresponds with Benetton’s 1995 Renault-powered program.
Inside is a blue diamond-quilted lining and the original small woven United Colors of Benetton / made in Italy neck label. This labeling and Italian manufacture are notable compared with many surviving Benetton F1 jackets carrying separate Formula 1 Racing Team or Japanese-market labels. Comparable genuine period Made-in-Italy Benetton F1 jackets with UCB labeling survive in the vintage market.
Condition:
This is a genuinely well-worn vintage piece and its condition is part of its character. The black exterior has faded substantially to charcoal with uneven fading, creasing and general wear throughout. There is visible tearing/fraying along the lower sleeve. Substantial color fade at shoulders - photographed in detail. The blue quilted lining shows significant age, fading and wear. Ribbing and graphics show age consistent with the rest of the garment.
